When my friend Arminnie told me that she was starting her own image consulting business I was thrilled for her...and me!!! As a huge "What Not to Wear" fan I was very excited for the opportunity to have my own personal makeover just like the girls on TV!!!

The value of relationships

I am not going to offer up any excuses for my delinquency as a blogger...I am going to make a commitment, however, to being more diligent in the future!

A couple of evenings ago I had the absolute privilege of attending a “sisters of the heart” get together at a very dear friend’s residence in Edmonton, Alberta. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect, to indulge, and to focus on that which I associate, above all else, with success – RELATIONSHIPS!!! Each of the women in the room (and those joining us via Skype) had incredible stories to share and contributed immense value to the group! I felt humbled and honoured to be amongst such incredibly talented and strong women! Listening to the success stories of these amazing women reinforced my belief that relationships ARE the foundation of success.

They spoke of the relationships with family, friends, co-workers, and medical practitioners. Less overtly discussed, but still prominent, were relationships with life, work, play, spirituality, and self. The common thread was positive and healthy relationships contributing significantly to the quality of life and the success of these women.

Throughout the evening I realized that while I had been busy planning and strategizing for success I had been neglecting the people and relationships that could help me along the way; busy activities do not create success, relationships create success. I have a tremendous network of family, friends, and colleagues who I admire and appreciate for all their unique gifts. It would have been impossible for me to achieve the successes I have without them and it will be incredibly difficult to achieve future successes without them; I am grateful for each of you. My involvement with professional associations and community networks has also been valuable in providing opportunities for personal and professional development. Happy Small Business Week!

My daughter left the sweetest voice mail message on my cell phone yesterday morning, "Happy Small Business Week Mom"!

I had been receiving information from the Fort Saskacthewan Chamber of Commerce and The Business Link for a few weeks but didn't realize the impact of Small Business Week until I listened to the message from my daughter. Small businesses not only contribute to the economy but to family and community. I am proud to be a small business owner and am grateful everyday for the opportunities is provides.

Enjoying Life

I went for a walk this afternoon with no where in particular to go and nothing in particular to do. Generally I have errands to run, calls to make, emails to answer, or resumes to type. It was a treat to walk slowly along the river and across the bridge, giggling along with the little girl wearing pig tails and a denim dress as she fed the geese, ducks, and gulls that surrounded her and her popcorn bag. Watching people walk, kids play, and construction workers relax in the shade from the heat of the day got me thinking about all the time we spend being busy and denying ourselves the time to just enjoy and be! Had I been a hurry to get somewhere I wouldn't have noticed the little girl feeding the birds or the construction workers resting in the shade or the people who, just like me, were loving the day!!!

I am feeling energized and inspired after my little excursion - what a shame it would have been to not have taken the time to enjoy the day. Time is the most limited of all the non-renewable resources and the one most of us think about the least. We talk about and plan for tomorrow, next week, and next time but forget that the most important moment of all is NOW!
